THE CHEMIN DES DAMES COMMUNAL CEMETERIES

The grouping of the graves into vast necropolis started in the 1920’s, at the end of the war. These graves were up to there scattered into temporary military cemeteries or into communal cemeteries in the whole area of the Chemin des Dames.

However, lots of French and British carrés militaires (type of graves, squares) and some graves still remain within the communal cemeteries.
These graves have to be maintained by the municipalities with the financial support of the French State (for the French Combatants) and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (for the British combatants).
