THE DANISH AT THE CHEMIN DES DAMES

 Cimetière danois de Braine

Braine Danish necropolis is situated nearby the N31-E46 at around ten kilometres from Soissons and more precisely on the side of the D14 in direction of Reims, nearby a French military cemetery.

This necropolis counts 79 graves of Danish soldiers dead during the Great War on French soil.

Their story is special: coming from Slesvig, a territory annexed by Prussia in 1886 and that became Danish again in 1920; these soldiers had to serve in the German ranks and sacrifice themselves for a cause that wasn’t theirs.

To commemorate their tragic fate on French soil, a Committee (in Denmark with a section in Paris) was charged of the gathering of the bodies buried quite everywhere in France and whose families wished to transfer them into an other cemetery. Braine cemetery is like a symbol of the Slesvigians’ fights during Great War.

A monument designed by the Danish architect Gundlach-Petersen was unveiled on 7th May 1934. Representatives from the Danish and French Government attended to the ceremony.
